I had by no means heard of Hour earlier than this efficiency. I got here to see Thor & Mates and was greeted with what gave the impression to be an unusually massive band organising. The woodwind participant, Keith, came visiting and we received chatting. He defined that the ensemble was the brainchild of composer Michael Cormier-O’Leary. This mostly-Philly-based instrumental ensemble was not solely our opening act for the night, however would even be offering the majority of the “buddies” for headliner Thor Harris & Mates.
Hour was a pleasure to take heed to. Regardless of the scale of the band, or possibly due to it, it is a group of musicians that understands how you can hear to one another. Whereas mixing, I used to be shocked at how a lot area they every allowed. Nothing stepped on the rest, which actually permits the listener to benefit from the big dynamic vary they play in.
I’ll lazily describe this ensemble as taking part in library music, however every bit feels extra purposeful than what you often discover in these library comps. It additionally had fascinating moments that in some way made me consider The Glands, a praise I very, very not often throw round.
There’s numerous motion developing for Hour. A brand new document titled “Ghost Bridge” (Pricey Life Data) is due out on October 9. They are going to be taking part in two reveals to have fun the discharge: one in Philly on February twelfth and one in NYC on February thirteenth. Each will function a 13-piece ensemble and opening units from the unbelievable Bridget St. John. Yow will discover tickets and extra information HERE.
I recorded this from our common spot by the soundboard with the MK22’s and a very nice board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Nic Panken. I believe this is without doubt one of the greatest mixes I’ve heard Nic do on this room, and it makes for a incredible hear with a glass of wine as we watch the Hudson Valley fall settle in.
