The Messthetics are, in principle, a jazz band. The middle of the band consists of Joe Lally on Bass and Brendan Courtney on drums. I’m not going to lean too closely into the entire Fugazi factor; that’s on you to already know, however I’ll say that any rhythm part that has operated collectively for 40 years is critical shit. Rounding out the band, a quintet on this incantation, are Anthony Pirog on guitar and James Brandon Lewis on Sax, each able to concurrently summoning Angels and Demons on each be aware. So whereas that is, in principle, a jazz band, in actuality, it’s an absolute monster musical power which you could not keep away from.
After some temporary housekeeping by Brendan, the set began with “Deface The Foreign money,” the title observe on their new LP (Impulse), the place this band’s terrifying power and precision is instantly placed on show. Over the course of the night, we have been handled to all of the songs from Deface The Foreign money and several other from their earlier outing with Lewis, 2024’s aptly titled The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis.
This was not a present that lacked for highlights, but when I needed to level out a pair, I’d level out the transition out of “Asthenia” and its construct into “Fourth Wall”. By the point Pirog’s guitar solo began, it appeared very believable that Tubby’s tiny stay room may explode. The vitality within the room hit real nuclear meltdown ranges once we have been handled with the second face-melting model of Sonny Sharrock’s “Many Manions” of the night time. Two bands, two variations of “Many Mansions.” JFC!
I recorded this from the standard spot within the again with the Schoeps MK22s and a very good board feed from Tubby’s home engineer, Wil. The sound high quality is superb. Play loud!
