Composer Gabriel Prokofiev is opening an area devoted to the artwork of his father Oleg Prokofiev (1928-1998), son of composer Sergei Prokofiev. Oleg wrote that his father’s music impressed in him ‘a wave of some fantastic vitality…a poetic or creative impulse’.
Oleg grew to become recognized for his summary works created within the Fifties in defiance of the Soviet Union’s strict cultural controls the place the doctrine of socialist realism was rigidly imposed. Come the Sixties, Oleg developed a relationship with British artwork historian Camilla Grey and for a decade Oleg hid his summary work, so the couple may get married. Granted permission in 1969, the 2 married however Camilla Grey died two years later. Oleg moved to the UK after her loss of life, however his summary works have been left behind, Oleg believing them misplaced. Returning to his former dwelling in Moscow in 1994, he found that the artwork works had been saved protected by the home’s proprietor alongside the artist’s sketches.
Camilla Grey’s e book The Nice Experiment: Russian Artwork 1863–1922, revealed in 1962, broke new floor in explaining Russian avant-garde artwork outdoors Russia. Grey was the daughter of Basil Grey, keeper of Oriental artwork on the British Museum, and the scholar of artwork and lettering Nicolete Grey, and granddaughter of the poet Laurence Binyon.
Gabriel Prokofiev has now opened Prokofiev Studio in Hackney which is able to home his father’s archive, that includes summary artworks from the Fifties alongside letters, postcards, sketchbooks, sculptures and different misplaced work. The opening exhibition, Bending Time will characteristic a reconstruction of Oleg’s Nineteen Nineties studio in Hackney Wick.
