For the reason that Seventies, Earth, Wind & Hearth has crossed the divides of music genres, with a sound that blends R&B, funk, soul and jazz.
A brand new HBO documentary, Earth, Wind & Hearth (To Be Celestial vs That is the Weight of the World), debuting Sunday, seems on the group’s origins and affect.
Earth, Wind & Hearth founder Maurice White set three ideas for the band to comply with: write music for a common viewers, evolve consciousness and alter the world.
“His imaginative and prescient was spot on, musically, culturally,” bassist Verdine White advised Morning Version.
The movie highlights a turning level for the band in 1974 once they carried out to an enormous crowd on the California Jam music pageant.
“We have been totally embraced,” drummer Ralph Johnson recalled. “They liked what we did.”
Singer Philip Bailey says Maurice White was “the pilot of the airplane,” guiding the band via its rise. Although the group break up in 1983 and later reunited, Earth, Wind & Hearth continues touring, with members calling the band’s legacy each “humbling and galvanizing.”
Whereas talking with Morning Version, Bailey, White and Johnson focus on the band’s founding imaginative and prescient, their memorable ’70s pageant breakthrough, their breakup and reunion — and what these experiences symbolize for his or her legacy at present.
