“Woman Marmalade” is a tune written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan. It grew to become a well-liked hit in 1975, recorded by the American woman group Labelle.
The tune is legendary for its sexually suggestive refrain of “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?”, which interprets into English as “Do you wish to sleep with me (tonight)?” Labelle held the number-one spot on the Billboard Scorching 100 chart for one week, and topped the Canadian RPM nationwide singles chart.
The tune has had many canopy variations through the years. In 1998, woman group All Saints launched a canopy of the tune that peaked at primary on the UK Singles Chart. The 2001 model by singers Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mýa, and Pink, recorded for the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack was a number-one hit on the Billboard Scorching 100 within the U.S. for five weeks.
Labelle’s model of “Woman Marmalade“ was produced by Allen Toussaint and Vicki Wickham. It was launched on August 3, 1974 as the primary single from the album Nightbirds. The tune was impressed by Bob Crewe’s first-hand observations of New Orleans. After it was first recorded by Kenny Nolan’s group Eleventh Hour in 1974, on Eleventh Hour’s Best Hits LP, Labelle’s producer Allen Toussaint determined to report it for Nightbirds. Patti LaBelle sang lead vocals on “Woman Marmalade” with backing vocals being contributed by band mates Nona Hendryx and Sarah Sprint. The tune’s refrain, “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?”, appeared beforehand within the play A Streetcar Named Need, uttered by the promiscuous Blanche DuBois. Lyrically, “Woman Marmalade” is a few prostitute. Patti LaBelle, the lead feminine vocal of the band, expressed that, “I didn’t know what it was about. No person, I swear that is God’s fact, no person advised me what I’d simply sung a tune about.”
