It is laborious for any band to make the outdated sound utterly new, however Jungle has spent a lot of the previous decade remodeling classic soul and R&B into one thing virtually alien. The grooves are deep and warmly acquainted, with wistful reflections on love and longing. However even within the brightest moments, there’s typically a thread of thriller and melancholy that leaves you questioning whether or not all the things is because it appears.
Fronted by the trio of Tom McFarland, Josh Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto, Jungle is understood for fluid dwell units, with songs that spill into one another. True to kind, on the Tiny Desk, they carry out greater than a half-dozen tracks that run collectively in a single, steady groove. “We’re gonna preserve the music rolling,” Lloyd-Watson tells the NPR crowd because the band melts seamlessly from 2018’s “Beat 54 (All Good Now)” into “Dominoes” from the 2023 album Volcano.
The members are all smiles right here, at the same time as they sing about light goals (“Casio”), dead-end infatuations (“Sometime, Someplace”) and the battle to carry on when all the things falls aside (“The Wave”). Essentially the most animated and infectious second arrives about midway by way of the set, because the group showcases its beautiful six-part harmonies on the 2025 single “Maintain Me Happy,” earlier than closing with a moody, slow-burning tackle 2023’s breakout track, “Again on 74.”
