This 12 months the Cheltenham Music Competition celebrated its eightieth birthday [see my review of the closing concert]. The birthday 12 months included two new commissions, 4 world premieres, large-scale orchestral performances and intimate chamber recitals. Cheltenham’s eightieth anniversary proved a chance to rejoice the Competition’s heritage – and likewise look to a promising future.

The competition’s eightieth season noticed a doubling of its viewers year-on-year, capping a vibrant anniversary 12 months that noticed the Competition reaffirm its place as a centre for world-class classical music within the UK.

The doubling of the Competition’s viewers figures displays a way of renewed power across the Competition in Jack Bazalgette’s inaugural 12 months as its Inventive Director. “To see so many 1000’s attend a programme of this breadth has been genuinely thrilling,” he stated. “Cheltenham is held in each esteem and affection eighty years on, and our mission in our ninth decade is to deepen and broaden that relationship with concert-goers, the classically curious and present fans alike.”
