NPR’s Ailsa Chang speaks with Raina Douris, host of World Cafe at member station WXPN, about Mitski’s new album, Nothing’s About to Occur to Me.
AILSA CHANG, HOST:
When you’ve solely ever heard one sound from the rock artist Mitski, there’s an opportunity it may need been this one.
(SOUNDBITE OF TINY DESK CONCERT)
MITSKI: (Singing) Mother, would you wash my again?
CHANG: (Laughter) That’s Mitski all the way in which again in 2015, screaming into her guitar whereas acting at NPR’s Tiny Desk. It went a bit viral at the moment. Mitski’s music has reworked lots over the 5 albums that she’s launched since, together with this newest one, out in the present day, known as “Nothing’s About To Occur To Me.”
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “WHERE’S MY PHONE?”)
MITSKI: (Singing) The place did it go? The place’s my telephone?
CHANG: Right here to speak to us about it’s Raina Douris, host of World Cafe at member station WXPN in Philadelphia. Hey, Raina.
RAINA DOURIS, BYLINE: Hey.
CHANG: Hey. OK, so I acquired to speak to Mitski again in 2018 after I interviewed her. I’ve seen her carry out. I like her. However for these of us who do not know a lot about her, inform us about Mitski’s backstory.
DOURIS: Yeah. So she’s been round making music since round 2012. Her music has developed lots over time, however at its core, I might describe her as indie rock. And he or she is not what I might name a mainstream artist, essentially.
CHANG: Proper, proper.
DOURIS: It wasn’t till her seventh album that she had a music chart on the Billboard Scorching 100.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “MY LOVE MINE ALL MINE”)
MITSKI: (Singing) ‘Trigger my love is mine, all mine. My love, mine, mine, mine. Nothing within the…
CHANG: Love that music.
DOURIS: Yeah. And, I imply, after I say that she is not a mainstream artist, that does not imply she does not have an enormous following. She does, and they’re very devoted. And there have been instances the place her followers have gotten perhaps a bit too intense. In 2019, she took a hiatus. She deleted her social media, and he or she stopped touring. After which, a few years later, she got here out of that hiatus and began releasing music once more. So there are pressures, there are expectations that include being a profitable artist. And there is the fan consideration, and that is one thing that Mitski has been open about combating a bit, and that is one thing that is mirrored thematically and within the narrative-style storytelling on this album.
CHANG: Wait. Narrative-style? What do you imply by that? Like, give us an instance.
DOURIS: Effectively, she was very influenced by Shirley Jackson novels when writing these songs. A few of the music follows a story just like the character’s perspective in Shirley Jackson’s guide “We Have At all times Lived In The Fortress.” And there is a music, “The White Cat,” (ph) which was impressed by Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting Of Hill Home.”
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “THAT WHITE CAT”)
MITSKI: (Singing) The white neighborhood cat marking my home. It is imagined to be my home. However I assume, in accordance with cats, now it is his home.
(LAUGHTER)
CHANG: It is type of hilarious (laughter).
DOURIS: I do know. As a cat proprietor, I actually associated to that. The press launch for this album says itself, Mitski explores a wealthy narrative whose principal character is a reclusive girl in an unkempt home. Outdoors of her dwelling, she’s a deviant. Within her dwelling, she is free.
CHANG: Ooh.
DOURIS: And there is a theme of isolation to those songs and of separation from the surface world, which I discover so attention-grabbing as a result of Mitski has this lively fan base, and he or she has needed to arrange some sturdy boundaries round her private life.
CHANG: So once you take heed to this report and also you’re occupied with a lady, an artist who has needed to set her personal boundaries, is there a music that displays that?
DOURIS: The one that basically grabbed me straight away and the one which I have never actually been capable of cease occupied with is a music known as “Lifeless Girls.” It begins with the road, would you could have preferred me higher if I might died so you possibly can inform my story? And in that music…
CHANG: Wow.
DOURIS: …She’s exploring this concept round how girls’s tales are so typically co-opted by different individuals, typically males. When a lady cannot converse for herself – on this case, if she’s useless – whether or not it is a well-known girl or a sufferer in a real crime story, individuals could make that girl’s life and persona match into no matter narrative they need. So to me, that is additional highly effective coming from somebody like Mitski who’s coping with that inside and outdoors world and the pressures that include being well-known, and it actually will get again to that feeling of desirous to have management over your personal story and your personal world.
CHANG: Yeah.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “DEAD WOMEN”)
MITSKI: (Singing) Would you could have preferred me higher if I might died?
CHANG: Raina Douris, host of World Cafe at WXPN in Philadelphia. Mitski’s new album, “Nothing’s About To Occur To Me,” is out now. And you’ll hear extra from Raina on this week’s episode of New Music Friday from NPR Music.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “DEAD WOMEN”)
MITSKI: (Singing) Rifle by means of all of it. Fill the blanks with what you want. Do-do-do-do-do-do. Do-do…”
